Planning Student

Each year CPF invites planning students to compete for a number of scholarships.  Scholarships are offered to students enrolled in  undergraduate and graduate planning programs in California accredited schools. Scholarships are also offered to students in non-accredited schools.

ACCREDITED PLANNING PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

Application packets will be mailed to the accredited planning schools in early February 2009.  The deadline for filing is Friday, March 27, 2009 (postmarked).  Interested students should contact their respective faculty or staff advisors for additional information.

1. Outstanding Student Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded statewide based on an application and selection process by the CPF Board.  These scholarships are designed for continuing students entering their final year of an undergraduate or master's degree accredited planning program.  Criteria for the scholarships include academic performance, professional promise in advancing excellent planning in California, financial need, and increasing diversity in the profession of planning.

All five top statewide scholarships include APA California Conference registration and a one-year student membership in APA.

First place: $5,000
Runners-up (three): $3,000

Outstanding Diversity Award: $3,000

2. Designated Scholarships

Includes a one-year student membership in APA.

Paul Crawford/California Planning Roundtable Scholarships: Up to $2,000.  This scholarship is sponsored in honor of Paul Crawford by the California Planning Roundtable for students interested in public planning in California.

Richard G. Munsell/California Planning Roundtable Scholarships: Up to $2,000.  This scholarship is sponsored in honor of Richard G. Munsell by the California Planning Roundtable for students interested in public planning in California.

Ken Milam/County Planning Directors' Association Scholarship: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by the County Planning Director’s Association in honor of Ken Milam for students interested in public planning in California.

PBS&J Scholarship: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by PBS&J.

 

3. Section Award Scholarships

The following scholarships are provided by sponsoring Sections within the California Chapter, and include a one-year student membership in APA.

Central Section/Russell Fey Scholarship: $1,000.  The Central Section has contributed to this award to honor Russell Fey, founding faculty member of the planning program at California State University Fresno.  The Section encourages consideration of students from the Central Valley for this award.

Central Coast Section: $1,000.  Three scholarships are sponsored by the Central Coast Section.  The scholarship is for a student attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  Additionally, $1,000 scholarships are given to students attending UC Santa Barbara and California State Channel Islands, which is described in the non-accredited section.

Inland Empire Section: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by the Inland Empire Section and is intended for students from Riverside or San Bernardino counties attending accredited planning schools within the State of California.

Los Angeles Section: Three scholarships of $1,000 each.  Four scholarships are sponsored by the Los Angeles Section.  One scholarship is allocated to each of the following accredited planning schools: Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, and USC.  The fourth scholarship is designated to California State University Northridge, which is described in the non-accredited section.

Northern Section: Two scholarships of $1,000 each.  Three scholarships are sponsored by the Northern Section.  One scholarship is allocated to each of the following accredited planning schools: San Jose State University and the University of California, Berkeley.  The third scholarship is designated to a student attending one of the following non-accredited planning schools: Humboldt State University, San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University, or Stanford.

Orange Section: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by the Orange Section for eligible students attending the accredited planning program at the University of California, Irvine.

 

4. Departmental Scholarships

Includes a one-year student membership in APA.

Continuing Student: $1,000.  Winners are selected based on academic performance and financial need.  The faculty in each accredited professional program designates one continuing student.  Each recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship and a one-year student membership in APA.

Graduating Student Merit Awards.  Winners are based on academic performance and professional promise.  The faculty in each accredited professional program designates one graduating student annually.  Each recipient receives a one-year membership in APA.

NON-ACCREDITED PLANNING PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

Three scholarships are available for students in designated non-accredited planning-related programs. During the winter, CPF contacts faculty in the designated programs to solicit nominations. The programs are at these schools: San Francisco State, Sonoma State, CSU Northridge, CSU Chico, UC Davis – Environmental Planning, UCSB Environmental Studies, CSU Channel Islands, Humboldt State, Stanford, San Diego State University, and the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Faculty are urged to consider these criteria when selecting their nominees:
· Financial need
· Academic Excellence
· Commitment to serve the planning profession in California

The specific scholarships are as follows:

CURRENT SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS 

In 2008, the CPF Scholarship Fund awarded over $48,000 in scholarships and APA memberships to graduate and undergraduate planning students who will become practicing planners in California.  This year’s 23 scholarship winners and 18 merit scholarship winners, selected by the faculty in each planning program, were acknowledged at a special awards luncheon during the 2008 CCAPA Conference in Hollywood.
