Planning Student

Each year CPF invites planning students to compete for a number of scholarships.  Scholarships are offered to students enrolled in  undergraduate and graduate planning programs in California accredited schools. Scholarships are also offered to students in non-accredited schools.

ACCREDITED PLANNING PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

CPF invites eligible students from the nine accredited undergraduate and graduate planning programs in California to compete for a number of scholarships.  Accredited programs are offered by the following planning schools: Cal Poly Pomona; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; San Jose State University; the University of California campuses at Berkeley, Irvine, and Los Angeles; and the University of Southern California.  Application packets will be mailed to the accredited planning schools in March 2008. The deadline for filing is Friday, April 25, 2008 (post mark). Interested students should contact their respective faculty or staff advisors for additional information.

Scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria:

The specific scholarships are as follows:

1. Outstanding Student Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded statewide based on an application and selection process by the CPF Board.  These scholarships are designed for continuing students entering their final year of an undergraduate or master's degree program.  Criteria for the scholarships include academic performance, professional promise, financial need and increasing diversity in the profession of planning.

All four of the statewide scholarships include CCAPA conference registration and a one-year student membership in APA.

First place:  $4,000  
Runners-up (three):  $2,000

The following scholarships are provided by sponsoring sections within the California Chapter, and include a one year student membership in APA.

Russell Fey Scholarship:  $1,000. The Central Section has contributed to this award to honor Russell Fey, founding faculty member of the planning program at Fresno State University.  The Section encourages consideration of students from the Central Valley for this award.

Central Coast Section:  $3,000($1,000 each for Cal Poly SLO, UCSB and Cal State Channel Islands)  Revenues from the sponsorship of previous CCAPA conferences fund this scholarship.  It focuses on students from the Central Coast (Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties).

Inland Empire Section: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by the Inland Empire Section and is intended for students from Imperial, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties attending accredited planning schools within the State of California.

Los Angeles Section:  3 at $1,000 (each).  Four scholarships are sponsored by the Los Angeles Section. One scholarship is allocated to each of the following accredited planning schools: Cal Poly State University Pomona, UCLA, and USC. The fourth scholarship is designated to CSU Northridge, which is described in the Non accredited Section.

Northern Section: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by the Northern Section for eligible students attending an accredited planning program at either San Jose State University or the University of California, Berkeley.

Orange Section: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by the Orange Section for eligible students attending the accredited planning program at the University of California, Irvine.

Ken Milam Scholarship: $1,000.  This scholarship is sponsored by the County Planning Director’s Association in honor of Ken Milam for students interested in public planning in California.

Richard G. Munsell/CPR Scholarship: $1,000 (one graduate, one undergraduate).  This scholarship is sponsored in honor of Richard G. Munsell by the California Planning Roundtable for students interested in public planning in California. Please note that a seond $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student attending a designated non-accredited planning program, as outlined in the Non Accredited Section

2. Departmental Scholarships

Includes a one-year student membership in APA

Continuing Student:  $500.  Winners are selected based on academic performance and financial need.  The faculty in each accredited professional program designates one continuing student.  Each recipient receives a $500 scholarship and a one-year student membership in APA.  

Graduating Student Merit Awards are based on academic performance and professional promise.  The faculty in each accredited professional program designates one graduating student annually.  Each recipient receives a one-year membership in APA.

NON ACCREDITED PLANNING PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

Three scholarships are available for students in designated non-accredited planning-related programs. During March, CPF contacts faculty in the designated programs to solicit nominations. The programs are at these schools: San Francisco State, Sonoma State, CSU Northridge, CSU Chico, UC Davis – Environmental Planning, UCSB Environmental Studies, San Diego State University, and the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Faculty are urged to consider these criteria when selecting their nominees:
· Financial need
· Academic Excellence
· Commitment to serve the planning profession in California

CURRENT SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS 

In 2006, the CPF Scholarship Fund awarded over $34,000 in scholarships and APA memberships to graduate and undergraduate planning students who will become practicing planners in California.  This year’s 26 scholarship winners and 18 merit scholarship winners, selected by the faculty in each planning program, were acknowledged at a special awards luncheon during the 2006 CCAPA Conference in Orange County.
