Each year CPF invites planning students to compete for a number of scholarships. Scholarships are offered to students enrolled in eligible planning programs in California (both accredited and non-accredited programs). All scholarship application materials are sent directly to eligible programs. Students interested in CPF scholarships should contact their faculty or staff advisors for additional information.

Accredited Planning Program Scholarships

The deadline for submitting applications for the 2013 CPF Scholarship Program is March 29, 2013 (postmark).

Eligible accredited planning programs in California include:

  • California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Undergraduate and Graduate)
  • California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Undergraduate and Graduate)
  • San Jose State University
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • University of California, Irvine
  • University of California, Los Angeles
  • University of Southern California

1. Outstanding Student Scholarships

scholarships are awarded statewide based on an application and selection process by the CPF Board. These scholarships are designed for continuing students entering their final year of an undergraduate or master's degree accredited planning program. Criteria for the scholarships include academic performance, professional promise in advancing excellent planning in California, financial need, and increasing diversity in the profession of planning.

All five top statewide scholarships include APA California Conference registration and a one-year student membership in APA.

  • First place: $5,000
  • Runners-up (three): $3,000
  • Diversity in Planning Award: $3,000
2. Designated Scholarships

Includes a one-year student membership in APA.

  • Paul C. Crawford/California Planning Roundtable Scholarship: $1,000 This scholarship is sponsored in honor of Paul C. Crawford by the California Planning Roundtable for students interested in public planning in California.
  • Russell Fey Scholarship: $1,000 The Central Section contributes to this award to honor Russell Fey, founding faculty member for the planning program at Fresno State University. The Section encourages consideration of students from the Central Valley for this award.
  • Ken Milam Scholarship: $1,000 This scholarship is sponsored in honor of Ken Milam by the County Planning Director’s Association for students interested in public planning in California.
  • Richard G. Munsell/California Planning Roundtable Scholarships: $1,000 This scholarship is sponsored in honor of Richard G. Munsell by the California Planning Roundtable for students interested in public planning in California.
  • Paul Wack Sustainability Scholarship: $1000 This scholarship is sponsored by Paul Wack, a long-time CPF Board Member.
 
  • Frank Wein/California Planning Roundtable Scholarship: $1,000 This scholarship is sponsored in honor of Frank Wein by the California Planning Roundtable.
  • David Wilcox Scholarship: $1,000 This scholarship is sponsored in honor of David Wilcox by the Wilcox/Gerhardt families.
3. Section Award Scholarships

The following scholarships are provided by sponsoring Sections within the California Chapter, and include a one-year student membership in APA.

  • Central Coast Section: $1,000 Three scholarships are sponsored by the Central Coast Section. One is for a student attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Additionally, $1,000 scholarships are given to students attending UC Santa Barbara and California State University, Channel Islands, which is described in the non-accredited section.
  • Inland Empire Section: $1,000 This scholarship is sponsored by the Inland Empire Section and is intended for students from Riverside or San Bernardino counties attending accredited planning schools within the State of California.
  • Los Angeles Section: Three scholarships of $1,000 each Four scholarships are sponsored by the Los Angeles Section. One scholarship is allocated to each of the following accredited planning schools: Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, and USC. The fourth scholarship is designated to California State University Northridge, which is described in the non-accredited section.
  • Northern Section: Two scholarships of $1,000 each Three scholarships are sponsored by the Northern Section. One scholarship is allocated to each of the following accredited planning schools: San Jose State University and the University of California, Berkeley. The third scholarship is designated to a student attending one of the following non-accredited planning schools: Humboldt State University, San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University, or Stanford University.
  • Orange Section: $1,000 This scholarship is sponsored by the Orange Section for eligible students attending the accredited planning program at the University of California, Irvine.

4. Departmental Scholarships

Includes a one-year student membership in APA. *

  • Continuing Student: $1,000 Winners are selected based on academic performance and financial need. The faculty in each accredited professional program designates one continuing student. Each recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship and a one-year student membership in APA.
  • Graduating Student Merit Awards Winners are based on academic performance and professional promise. The faculty in each accredited professional program designates one graduating student annually. Each recipient receives a one-year membership in APA.

Non-ACCREDITED Planning Program Scholarships

The deadline for submitting applications for the 2013 CPF Scholarship Program is March 29, 2013 (postmark).

Nine scholarships are available for students in designated non-accredited planning-related programs including:

  • California State University, Channel Islands Environmental Science & Resource Management Program
  • California State University, Chico Department of Geography and Planning
  • California State University, Northridge Department of Urban Studies & Planning
  • Humboldt State University Department of Environmental Science & Management
  • San Diego State University City Planning Program
  • San Francisco State University Department of Urban Studies and Planning
  • Sonoma State University Department of Environmental Studies & Planning
  • Stanford University Urban Studies Program
  • University of California, Davis Department of Environmental Science and Policy
  • University of California, San Diego Urban Studies and Planning Program
  • University of California, Santa Barbara Bren School of Environmental Science & Management; Environmental Studies Program
 

Each school may nominate one students as a candidate. Faculty are urged to consider these criteria when selecting their nominees:academic excellence, commitment to serve the planning profession in California, and financial need.

The specific scholarships are as follows:

  • Central Coast Two $1000 scholarships; one for a planning student at UC Santa Barbara
  • Los Angeles Section One $1,000 scholarship for a planning student at CSU Northridge
  • Northern Section Two $1000 scholarships for a planning student at Humboldt State, San Francisco State, Sonoma State, or Stanford University
  • Sacramento Valley Section Two $1000 scholarships; one for a planning student at UC Davis and one for a planning student at CSU Chico
  • San Diego Section Two $1000 scholarships; one for a planning student at San Diego State and one for a planning student at UC San
